The Sonoma Cottage Initiative
It took only a few short days after the October wildfires began for the wine country community to pick up their families, lift their chins, and look the charred landscape right in the face. Now, nearly 8 months later - 8 months of planning, donating, and collaborating - we’re thrilled and grateful to announce the launch of the Sonoma Wildfire Cottage Initiative.
The Cottages will be an immediate pilot program for the construction of 8 to 10 affordable, innovative homes on land that has been generously donated by Medtronic to the Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County chapter. Joining the team to direct the entire building process is Marianne Cusato of Cypress Community Development Corp., who specializes in disaster relief construction and has inspired us with her incredible work on the Katrina Cottages and her Hurricane Irma project.
The master plan for the Cottages is coming from the creative minds at Opticos Design, Berkley’s leading sustainable and urban architecture firm. Also joining the rebuild initiative are Connect-Homes, West Coast SIPs, and GigaCrete/Presidio Realty Advisors, all professionals in the construction and housing industry, and together, the Press Democrat, Senator Mike McGuire’s office, and Redwood Credit Union Community Fund Inc. have granted $150,000 specifically for this project.
On June 6th, we gathered with Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County on the Medtronic land to unveil, celebrate, and discuss the future of the cottages. With this passionate and kind workforce operating alongside our communities, families, and partners, the cottages are expected to be finished and ready for move-in by early winter of this year.
A million thank yous to our new partners and team, and to everyone who has donated, supported, and followed the journey of Rebuild Wine Country - you have helped build the foundation of these homes, and the future for beautiful families in our community.
